Can the Red Sox Win Another World Series in 2008?

Red Sox Nation is waiting in anticipation for the 2008 MLB season with the hopes of seeing back to back championships, and their prospects look great. No one knows what the season holds, but we can consider a few important things that give the Red Sox an excellent chance of going to the post season again at the very least. After all, the off season was busy, especially with the entire steroids controversy heating up after the Mitchell report was issued. The good news is that during the off-season, the Red Sox managed to keep most of the 2007′s World Series winning team intact.

Their pitching rotation, and their infield and outfield are basically the same. Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield is back, and Doug Mirabelli, the Sox backup pitcher, finalized a one year deal to stick around. Big bats Ramirez and Ortiz will be back too.

One of the biggest things that stops any team from making it to the playoffs – whether its baseball, football, basketball, etc. – is the loss of players that helped hold the team together.

Missing team leaders can make a team lose their passion and emotion. You lose that; you will lose games. And that’s what happened to the Red Sox after their 2004 World Series win; they lost a number of their important players like Pedro Martinez, Derek Lowe and Orlando Cabrera. A team needs more than three men for the outfield to make it to the playoffs anyway. Crisp underperformed last year, and Ellsbury became a playoff hero last year, but both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Consistency is big part of the game. The season is very long, and stamina and consistency is what gets teams to the playoffs.

Fortunately, Boston’s pitching rotation looks like it is going to be very similar to last year’s. Beckett, Schilling, Matsuzaka, Wakefield, and Lester or Bucholz is a powerhouse lineup.

The first half of the Red Sox season looks only mildly challenging. Based on the player’s statistics and track records alone, the Red Sox look like they ought to win the ’08 World Series if the line-up doesn’t change, at least on paper. But once again, these guys have to play with heart and be consistent.

Injuries, illnesses, and bannings because of steroids notwithstanding, the Boston Red Sox have a good chance at going all the way once again. The team is strong and although some players have filed for arbitration in order to increase their salaries, there doesn’t seem to be any indication that they will leave the team. The Yankees are still aimlessly drifting in an effort to finish filling their roster.

There are also negotiations still in the works regarding Johan Santana, a possible addition to the Red Sox’s final roster. Once again, only time will tell. But the two time Cy Young Award winner would definitely make an impact on the team. The Boston Red Sox need to snatch him up before the Yankees or the Mets.

The Red Sox have an excellent chance of winning back to back championships, and it’s theirs to lose. If the Red Sox can play with heart, consistency, stamina and stay reasonably healthy, I expect to see them winning in October again.

messed up by being near the window. (On an airplane!)
2. I got a call from a Kansas Congressman’s (Moore) staffer
(Howard Bauleke), who wanted to go to Capetown. I started to
explain the length of the flight and the passport information,
and then he interrupted me with, ”I’m not trying to make you
look stupid, but Capetown is in Massachusetts”
Without trying to make him look stupid, I calmly
explained, ”Cape Cod is in Massachusetts, Capetown is in
Africa”

3. A senior Vermont Congressman (Bernie Sanders) called, furious
about a Florida package we did. I asked what was wrong with the
vacation in Orlando . He said he was expecting an ocean-view
room. I tried to explain that’s not possible, since Orlando is
in the middle of the state.

me, I looked on the map and Florida is a very thin state!”

and asked, ”Do airlines put your physical description on your
bag so they know whose luggage belongs to whom?” I said, ‘No,
why do you ask?’
He replied, ”Well, when I checked in with the airline, they put a tag on my luggage that said (FAT), and I’m overweight. I think that’s very rude!”
After putting him on hold for a minute, while I looked into it. (I was
dying laughing). I came back and explained the city code for
Fresno , Ca. is (FAT – Fresno Air Terminal), and the airline was
just putting a destination tag on his luggage.
8. A Senator John Kerry aide (Lindsay Ross) called to inquire about
a trip package to Hawaii . After going over all the cost info,
she asked, ”Would it be cheaper to fly to California and then
take the train to Hawaii ?”
9. I just got off the phone with a freshman Congressman, Bobby Bright (D) from Ala who asked, ”How do I know which plane to get on?”
I asked him what exactly he meant, to which he replied, ”I was
told my flight number is 823, but none of these planes have
numbers on them.”
10. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D) called and said, ”I need to fly to Pepsi-Cola , Florida .
Do I have to get on one of those little computer planes?”
I asked if she meant fly to Pensacola , FL on a commuter
plane.
She said, ”Yeah, whatever, smarty!”
11. Mary Landrieu (D) La. Senator called and had a question
about the documents she needed in order to fly to China . After
a lengthy discussion about passports, I reminded her that she
needed a visa. ‘Oh, no I don’t. I’ve been to China many times
and never had to have one of those.”
I double checked and sure enough, her stay required a visa. When I told her this she said, ”Look, I’ve been to China four times and every time they have accepted my American Express!”
12. A New Jersey Congressman (John Adler) called to make reservations, ”I want to go from Chicago to Rhino, New York .”
I was at a loss for words. Finally, I said, ”Are you sure that’s the
name of the town?”
‘Yes, what flights do you have?” replied the man.
After some searching, I came back with,
”I’m sorry, sir, I’ve looked up every airport code in the
country and can’t find a rhino anywhere.”
”The man retorted, ”Oh, don’t be silly! Everyone knows where it is.
Check your map!”
So I scoured a map of the state of New
York and finally offered, ”You don’t mean Buffalo , do you?”
The reply? ”Whatever! I knew it was a big animal.”
Now you know why the Government is in the shape that
it’s in!

Angelina Gualdoni’s richly nuanced paintings, six of which made up her impressive solo debut “Demo,” explore notions of progress and decline by presenting images of utopian architecture in a state of ruin.

These works, all acrylic and oil on canvas, document the demolition of the Horizons pavilion, a theme ride and multimedia exposition based on conceptualizations of the future. Constructed in 1983 as part of Future World at Disney’s Epcot Center in Orlando, it was destroyed in 1999 and later replaced by another tourist attraction. The pavilion, a circular steel-frame structure, is, for the artist, emblematic of the modernist faith in social transformation achieved through technological means. It is also a symbol of failed dreams, of a future that never came to pass. Yet Gualdoni sees something recuperative amid the rubble, as evinced by the formal and conceptual contradictions at play within each of her carefully articulated compositions. This idealistic edifice is depicted from slightly skewed vantage points that give the appearance of being both far and near, and in multiple stages of decomposition.

The mangled supports of a dilapidated structure are silhouetted against a chemical sky like wild brambles. Midway belongs to a series of recent works depicting a world in constant change, prey to mankind’s malevolent inattentiveness. Abandoned buildings are eaten up by the ground on which they once proudly stood, subservient partners in a dialogue between the natural and man-made over which they have relinquished control. The role of chance is apparent in both the painting’s subject matter and technique. Drips, spills and stains create a force of abstraction that threatens to engulf what remains of the representational imagery. Nocturne portrays an abandoned shopping mall in the American Midwest, found through the internet like those in Midway and The Slow Continuum, and visited by the artist in person. Unprofitable or subject to protracted legal dispute, they have been marginalised by society and neglected by all but the occasional pack of wild dogs or thrill-seeking adolescents. They are here presented as territories in limbo, modern ruins vulnerable to nature’s entropic processes of recovery and repossession. Beneath a dark, threatening sky, trees and weeds surround and fill the buildings exerting strain on their physical structure, while a slick of poured paint seeps like bloody entrails into the foreground.

Praca dos Tres Poderes is a large, imposing square at the heart of Brasilia, the political capital of Brazil. Constructed between 1956 and 1960 to a design by visionary architect Oscar Niemeyer, and heralded as a landmark in contemporary urban planning, the city has come to be seen as a terrible utopian failure. Functionless, soul-numbing, and inhospitable to human trafffic, it today stands as a dated, retro icon, and a symbol of the death of Modernism itself. Gualdoni perfectly captures this emptiness, portraying a vast expanse of barren sky above the deserted pedestrian plaza, empty but for the discarded trolley of a popcorn vendor. The present, it is all too clear, is elsewhere, and the future is one of hushed uncertainty. Working from her own photographic documentation, Gualdoni depicts suburban architecture in a state of melancholy abandonment. Reclaimed by nature, the structures assume a life of their own as remnants of failure and unfulfilled expectation. In The Slow Continuum, weeds and young trees in the open concrete atrium of an elevated building are bathed in light from a momentary cloudbreak, evoking feelings of nostalgia and otherworldliness and hinting, perhaps, at the possibility of a more positive future to come. A similar sense of restrained but palpable emotion saturates those other works by the artist presented here.

well, I don’t know how exactly I could organize some stuff I do right now such as clubs and stuff into CAS hour requirements; i know that the Creativity, Action, and Service is loosely define but it’s difficult for me personally to decide b/c I’m so indecisive and contradict myself a lot…and would any activities help for the action part because i’m not a very athletic person
Extracurricular (Activities): FBLA, DECA, math team, Key club, academic/quiz bowl (w/e u want to call it),French club, volunteer at hospitals by transporting stuff (files, patients, medications, random things like that), thinking about tutoring in school next year, also thinking about recycle club, French club
for some of the stuff, we travel to competition to like ATL, Orlando, L.A., or some place- would that count towards action?
